The School of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time clinical-track (open rank) faculty position to begin August 2025.

We seek a music education scholar and teacher with the facility to engage a diverse set of music learning and teaching practices, and to take a leadership role in the implementation of a new city-school-based music teaching licensure degree program. The successful candidate will teach core courses in the music education area; serve as the coordinator of music teaching licensure and internships as well as other internship programs within the School of Theatre and Music; and mentor and document student progress.

The successful candidate will approach the music education discipline in culturally responsive ways, place high value on aural ways of knowing and organizing music, and center creative musical activities (arranging, composing, and improvising) in their scholarship and/or teaching. Clinical-track faculty members contribute to the university's general education program as needed, attend faculty meetings, support recruitment, provide service, and engage in other duties as assigned. Teaching duties are determined by qualifications and institutional needs. This clinical faculty position may require work over the summer; however, time away for individual research and professional practice will be supported as possible.

Salary

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Music Education or in Education. A record of, or clear potential for, professional development presentations at conferences, and demonstrated leadership potential in the field. Demonstrated success in teaching at the PK-12 and/or college/university levels. Working knowledge of state teaching licensure requirements. Fluency with office and content management software. A proven commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, access, and belonging in teaching and/or scholarship. Evidence of administrative, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Three or more years of experience teaching music in early-childhood, elementary, and/or secondary programs in city public schools. Working knowledge of the teaching licensure requirements for the State of Illinois. Competence in and engagement with vernacular, popular, indigenous, and non-Western musical practices. An understanding of and experience with teaching populations that reflect UIC's diverse student body.
