Tenure-Track 11-Month Full-Time Faculty Position
Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Music Instructor-Director of Bands commencing with the 2025-2026 academic year.

The primary responsibilities of this position include directing the Lancer Concert Band and the Lancer Marching Band, which runs concurrently with the Tournament of Roses Honor Band in the late fall as preparations for the Rose Parade performance commence.

Starting in 1927, Pasadena City College Bands have toured nationally and internationally and have appeared in all the Tournament of Roses Parades since 1930. The ensembles have collaborated with local and international artists and organizations, appearing in commercials, movies, music videos, the Emmy Awards, and the Shanghai International Band Festival.

The Pasadena City College Music Department has a longstanding tradition of excellence, including an impressive and comprehensive curriculum for music majors and non-majors in the areas of classical, jazz, popular, world, commercial production, and music business. The full-time and adjunct faculty includes leading educators, performers, conductors, composers, and scholars who work cooperatively toward student success.

Alumni of the PCC music program have successfully pursued careers worldwide in all aspects of the music business and have attended many of the finest institutions of higher education.

Complementing the band area, Pasadena City College ensembles are at the forefront of music education among California community colleges. Pasadena City College's over 30 performing ensembles have toured nationally and internationally and have collaborated with local and international arts organizations such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MUSIC INSTRUCTOR:

  • Direct the concert and marching bands and the Tournament of Roses Honor Band, and teach other music classes consistent with the person's expertise
  • Produce, rehearse, and direct all performances of the bands (concerts, football games, parades) according to approved and scheduled appearances
  • Oversee all aspects of the band program, including its organization, recruitment, development, and support personnel (students, faculty, and staff)
  • Oversee the budget for band and Tournament of Roses Honor Band expenditures
  • Maintain regular close contact with area high schools, within and adjacent to the PCC District, for recruiting and mutual program support
  • Coordinate the curriculum of selected classes, including the instrumental techniques classes
  • Participates in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Work closely with the music department faculty and the administration to coordinate plans with other music and student groups
  • Undertake the departmental and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member including college governance, committee service and/or other appropriate activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice-President for Instruction or the Dean of the Performing and Communication Arts Division

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to direct concert band and marching band
  • Demonstrated proficiency in teaching instrumental music at the college level
  • Ability to teach music appreciation, music education, and instrumental techniques courses
  • Organizational and managerial skills relevant to marching band scheduling
  • Ability to work with band faculty and staff to further support the department's commitment to students' technical and artistic development
  • Versatility in meeting the needs of both music and non-music majors
  • Ability to work collaboratively with full-time music faculty colleagues, adjunct faculty, large ensemble directors, staff, and the community
  • Experience in generating and attracting financial resources to support the band program and its performances
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to effectively engage with marginalized students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques





MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in music

OR
  • Bachelor's degree in music AND a Master's degree in humanities,

OR
  • A valid California Community College Instructor Credential

OR
  • The equivalent

Degree must be shown as conferred on the transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of three years directing high school or college band programs
  • A demonstrated knowledge of and success in working with marching, football, pep, and concert bands
  • Demonstrated skill in effectively working with community and civic leaders in providing music for a variety of school, community, and civic functions
  • Proven success in recruiting, retaining, and mentoring music students
  • A willingness to maintain a work schedule that would include evening and weekend supervision of the band program on a continuing basis, including extensive involvement in the activities surrounding the annual Tournament of Roses Parade, including the organizing of Band Fest and preparing the Tournament of Roses Honor Band to march in the parade
  • Grant writing/fundraising expertise
  • Doctorate preferred




THE ASSIGNMENT:
  • 11 Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning July 2025.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Successful completion of Livescan clearance and TB screening
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109
  • Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member
